Step-by-step
What to do while you wait
01
Stay calm and keep your distance
Most wildlife bites occur when people try to corner or handle the animal. Give it space. Keep pets and children away from the area.
02
Contain the animal if you can do so safely
If the animal is in one room, close doors to limit its movement. Don't attempt to trap it yourself. Open an exterior door or window if you can do so safely. Some animals will leave on their own.
03
Don't use pest spray or repellents
Spraying a distressed animal may panic it and cause a bite. Leave it alone and call us.
04
Call us and describe what's happening
Tell us the species if you know it, where it is in the home, and whether it appears injured. We'll walk you through next steps.
05
If bitten or scratched, seek medical care
If anyone is bitten or scratched, especially by a bat or raccoon, go to urgent care or an ER. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis is time-sensitive.

Bats
Even a bat in the room while you slept requires rabies evaluation. Bat bites can be imperceptible. See a doctor.
Raccoons
Raccoons are a primary rabies vector. Do not approach. Any scratch or bite requires immediate medical attention.
Venomous snakes
Six SC species are venomous. If bitten, keep the limb still and go to the ER. Do not attempt to handle the snake.
Rats/rodents
Don't handle droppings without gloves and a mask. Hantavirus can be transmitted through disturbed droppings.
